Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Let's Talk Soccer!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Let's Talk Soccer! In-Person

Houston will host FIFA 2026 World Cup matches set to kick off in the summer of 2026. Football (fútbol) or soccer, as it is known in US, is a much-loved and extensively-played sport in many countries, including Spain and Latin America. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to highlight the role of soccer in the Hispanic culture: Let's Talk Soccer!

Be inspired by our guest speaker  Betirri in conversation with Lourdes Remond, Community Engagement Manager at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Betirri is an international artist recognized primarily by a series of paintings depicting bodiless sport figures in motion. Most of his work explores the concept of identity through contemporary or current and diverse lifestyles.

Betirri’s creative vision is inspired by the crossover between the culture of art and football. In his words, “Sports are a way of identity for many. Sports keep us in constant motion, motivated, inspired, and alive. Sports are full of emotions just like art."

His mission as an artist is to reflect the impact that sports have in our society by different visual creative outlets such as painting, muralism and graphics.

Lourdes Remond is Community Engagement Manager at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In her role, she focuses on co- creating with a diverse set of partners; among them Houston Public Library, a range of opportunities for the Museum to meaningfully connect with Houston's diverse communities right in the neighborhoods where they live.

Lourdes is a former broadcast reporter having worked over the years at KXLN- Univision Houston, Telemundo Network and CNN in Spanish in New York where she graduated with a master's in international Affairs from Columbia University in 2003.

Originally from Peru, Lourdes has been a proud Houstonian for the past fifteen years.
