Public Poetry Reading Series

Public Poetry Reading Series Online

Poetry comes alive the first Saturday of each month at 2 PM with readings performed by a creative mix of artists. Participants are invited to read a piece for Open Mic during featured poets intermission​.

Registration is required for this virtual event. The Public Poetry Reading Series uses the Microsoft Team platform for virtual meetings. Participants using their smartphones or tablets will need to download the Microsoft Team app to participate. Participants using their computers will not need to download the Microsoft Teams app.

This series is organized by Public Poetry and is presented in partnership with Houston Public Library.

Karla Cordero is the author of Grasshoppers Before Gods and How To Pull Apart The Earth (Not a Cult, 2018), winner of the 2019 San Diego Book Award and finalist for the International Book Award and the International Latino Book Award. She is a professor of creative writing and composition at MiraCosta College and San Diego City College and lives in San Diego, California.

 

Võ Đức Quang a recipient of the Susan T. Scanlon and the Joy Linsley Memorial Poetry Awards at the University of St. Thomas in Houston where he served as poetry editor for Laurels literary magazine. His poems have been appeared on Chopsticks Alley, diaCRITICS, and other print publications. His literary interests are 1940s-1975 Vietnamese and diasporic literature.

 

Chris Wise’s poetry publications include Colliding with Orion (an innovative textbook on writing poetry and short stories, Weasel Press, 2017), and Thirsty Earth (a journey through addiction and heartbreak in a full-length poetry collection, The Atomic Underground, 2021). He has been published in various poetry anthologies and literary magazines.  He is also a novelist, voice actor, television host, and a veteran of the US Army who lives in Houston, Texas.

 

Khalisa Rae is an award-winning poet, educator, and journalist in Durham, NC. She is the author of the debut poetry collection, Ghost in a Black Girl's Throat (Red Hen Press 2021), and Contributing Writer for Kindred. Her essays are featured in Autostraddle, Catapult, LitHub, as well as articles in Jezebel, Blavity, Bitch Media, NBC-BLK, and others. Her poetry appears in Southern Humanities Review, Gravy, Frontier Poetry, Florida Review, Rust & Moth, PANK, HOBART, among countless others. She is the winner of the Appy Award, Vulgar Genius, Bright Wings Poetry contest, the Furious Flower Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Prize, among other prizes. As a former Winter Tangerine, Frost Place and Watering Hole fellow, she is currently the EIC of Think in Ink BIPOC collective. Her YA novel in verse, Unlearning Eden, is forthcoming.
