Gregory School Historical Marker Dedication

Gregory School Historical Marker Dedication In-Person

As a repository for the history and culture of Houston's Black community, African American History Research Center at the Gregory School is honored to inhabit a building tied to the pinnacle of agency, uplift and freedom for newly emancipated African Americans: education. Gregory Elementary School (nee Gregory Institute) was established as a Freedmen’s Bureau school at the order of Major General Edgar M. Gregory, becoming the first school for African Americans in the city of Houston.  Thanks to the efforts of the African American Library - Gregory Friends, Gregory Elementary School has received an historical marker and we invite you to join us on Monday, December 12, 2022 at 11:00AM for its unveiling and dedication.

The marker dedication ceremony is open to all and will be held outside at the corner of WILSON and VICTOR streets in Freedmen's Town/Fourth Ward.  Parking is available in Gregory's lot and the surrounding streets.  Light refreshments and a tour of the galleries will follow the dedication.
